The straight version. No marketing fluff.
Both are available. You can pay once with the lifetime purchase and keep the app forever, or pay yearly with the annual plan. Lifetime exists so you never have to keep paying to keep your training history. Either option includes every future update.
Yes. The first 14 days are fully unlocked. You can build your plan, run with the Apple Watch app, and see every analytic. When the trial ends, pick lifetime or annual to keep going. Your data stays on your device either way.
Locally on your iPhone, using Apple's SwiftData. There is no Smart Runner account, no cloud sync, and no server we own. Workouts come in from Apple Health and the Apple Watch, both of which stay inside Apple's ecosystem under your control.
From your VDOT score, the model Jack Daniels formalized in Daniels' Running Formula. Enter one recent race result, any distance from 5K to marathon, and the app derives your easy, marathon, threshold, interval, and repetition paces. See the VDOT explainer for the full story.
You can manually set your VDOT in onboarding or override it later in Settings. The app also includes a volume-building mode that focuses on consistent aerobic work before locking onto a race date, which is the right call if you've been off for a while.
Yes, natively. The companion Watch app shows live pace, heart rate, distance, and your HR zone during the run. Structured workouts (intervals, tempo, fartlek) follow your pace window stage by stage. Start, pause, and finish from your wrist; data syncs back to the iPhone automatically.
Marathon and half marathon get the most attention, but 5K and 10K race targets are fully supported. Volume, intensity mix, and taper logic adapt to the distance you're training for.
Yes. Set your unit preference once in Settings (km plus Celsius, or mi plus Fahrenheit) and every distance, pace, and temperature in the app, the Watch, and notifications respects it.
Yes. On first launch the app reads your recent workout history from Apple Health and seeds your training load and fitness baseline. Pull to refresh on the Today screen any time to re-sync and clean up any duplicate imports.
ATL is acute training load (last week's stress). CTL is chronic training load (your fitness floor). TSB is the difference, which tells you whether you're fresh, fit, or fried. You don't have to learn the math: the app shows a simple form indicator and adjusts your plan accordingly. If you do want to learn it, the training-load guide walks through it.
Not directly. Smart Runner is iPhone and Apple Watch only. If your Garmin or Coros pushes workouts to Apple Health, those runs get picked up automatically, but there is no native integration with third-party platforms and no cloud bridge.
The volume-building mode is designed for runners returning from a layoff or building a first base. You set a weekly distance target you can sustain; the app fills in the right mix of easy, recovery, and the occasional quality session. You don't see the methodology unless you go looking for it.
